from the sermons of Imam Ali(pace be upon him ):sermon69

Spoken on the morning of the day when Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib (A.S) was fatally struck with sword.

I was sitting when sleep overtook me. I saw the Prophet (P.B.U.H. and His Household)  of Allah appear before me, and I said, A O Prophet (P.B.U.H. and His Household)  of Allah! what crookedness and animosity I had to face from the people. the Prophet (P.B.U.H. and His Household)  of Allah said: A Invoke (Allah) evil upon them, but I said, A Allah may change them for me with better ones and change me for them with a worse one.

Sayyid ar-Radhi says the following: A al-awad means crookedness and A al-ladad means animosity, and this is the most eloquent expression.
