Discussing a master’s thesis in the College of Islamic Sciences on the imagining of Islamic history in the novels of Jurji Zaidan

A Master’s thesis tagged “Imagination of Islamic History in the Narratives of Jurji Zaidan” was discussed in the College of Islamic Sciences at the University of Karbala, “The Seventeenth of Ramadan” as an option. The student, Kawthar Shaker Hilal Kazem, at nine o’clock on Sunday, corresponding to 6/18/2023, in the Imam Hussein Hall (PBUH) in the college.

The study aimed to reveal the way in which Gerji Zaidan represents a moment of Islamic history (the night of treachery by Imam Ali) and his attempt to reconstruct it as a narrative event that organizes the conflict between the real and imaginary characters of the novel, and rearranges the rhythm of time to suit the serial events in the novel in a sequence that is governed by the limits of the historical incident. .

The letter reached results, including:

  1. The study was an attempt to answer the problem that revolves around the method adopted by the novelist (Jerji Zaidan), in his formulation of the imagined events. Despite his interest in narrating historical facts, the manifestations of fiction in the novel were manifested through a set of simple and appropriate mechanisms and the nature of the stage in which Gerji Zaidan emerged more than a century ago.
  2. The experience of Gerji Zaidan in the historical novel remains an unprecedented experience in the Arab culture, and therefore his dealings with the historical material were not free, making it an artistic mask that disappeared in the robes of narration, storytelling, and personalities, which is the level that the Arab historical novel reached later at the hands of Naguib Mahfouz and others, It is a level that would not have been easily reached had it not been for the pioneering effort exerted by Gergy Zaidan in experimenting with this novelistic genre for which he was known.
