Maryam Abbas Amouri, a faculty member at the College of Islamic Sciences, University of Karbala, has successfully earned her Ph.D. in Arabic Language after defending her dissertation titled:
“The Vocabulary of the Holy Qur’an in the Studies of Modern Scholars – Foundation and Analysis”
The defense took place at the College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Karbala, in the presence of the Dean of the College of Islamic Sciences, Professor Dr. Mohammed Hussein Aboud Al-Taie, and the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Assistant Professor Dr. Khudair Jassim.
The dissertation explored and analyzed Qur’anic proper nouns from a foundational and lexicographical perspective, comparing them with similar terms in other Semitic languages. It also examined their morphological structures in terms of derivation and inflection, while tracing their semantic interpretations through modern Qur’anic exegesis, assessing the extent of agreement or divergence from classical scholars.
Among the key findings was that most Qur’anic proper nouns conform to Arabic linguistic rules and morphological patterns. However, a few terms were subject to scholarly debate, being attributed either to other languages or regarded as unique Qur’anic expressions unfamiliar to both Arabs and non-Arabs prior to the revelation.
This academic achievement marks a significant addition to the research output of the College of Islamic Sciences and reflects the faculty’s commitment to advancing Qur’anic and linguistic studies through rigorous academic inquiry.
