The Department of Arabic Language at the College of Islamic Sciences, University of Karbala, organized a specialized training course titled “Expression: Its Types, Foundations, and Aesthetics” for students of the Arabic Language Department, as part of its efforts to develop their linguistic abilities and equip them with the necessary skills prior to their teaching practicum.
The course was delivered by Prof. Dr. Saeed Hameed Kazem, Prof. Dr. Ali Mohammed Yaseen, and Lecturer Jaafar Sadiq Wahab. It included several topics that strengthened students’ understanding of the concept of expression, its types, and its importance in the educational process.
The three-day course aimed to clarify the significance of expression as both a literary and social activity that enables individuals to articulate their ideas and emotions using correct language and beautiful imagery, whether in a scientific or literary style that is coherent in form and content. Expression is considered a fundamental tool of persuasion and communication between speaker and listener, as it requires skill in presenting arguments and evidence—thus enhancing learners’ ability to construct influential and effective discourse.
The course also highlighted the aesthetics of the Arabic language, associated with eloquence, beauty, and clarity. It is the language that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) described by saying: “Indeed, some forms of eloquence are like magic,” due to its charm and ability to touch hearts. From this perspective, the course emphasized the importance of learning expression as an essential human and educational activity throughout various stages of learning.
The instructors affirmed that expression plays a significant role in enriching the learner’s imagination, teaching them sentence construction, and connecting ideas within a clear context that reveals meaning—making its learning a pedagogical necessity as the fourth core skill among the fundamental language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
This course comes as part of a series of training programs organized by the Department of Arabic Language to support students, improve their academic and linguistic levels, and prepare them with competence and confidence for practical teaching in schools.
