Recently published by Dar al-Sadiq Cultural Foundation in Babylon is a scholarly edited volume entitled:
“The Judge, Man of Letters Abu Ja‘far al-Bahathi al-Zawzani and What Remains of His Poetry”,
collected, edited, and studied by Prof. Dr. Nawras Ibrahim Abdulhadi, faculty member at the College of Islamic Sciences, University of Karbala.

The book sheds light on a prominent scholarly and literary figure of the 5th century AH, Judge al-Bahathi al-Zawzani, one of the distinguished judges and men of letters of the flourishing age of Arab thought and literature. This publication represents a qualitative step in reviving a long-forgotten literary heritage of a writer rarely addressed in modern studies.

Spanning 120 pages, the book is divided into two main sections:

  • Section One includes two chapters:
    1. “Al-Bahathi al-Zawzani: His Life and Literature”
    2. “Satire of the Virtuous in al-Bahathi al-Zawzani’s Poetry”
In these, the researcher offers an in-depth analytical study of his life, literary and social standing, along with his distinctive poetic style.
  • Section Two is devoted to the collection and critical edition of al-Zawzani’s remaining poems, presented in a rigorous scholarly effort that highlights both the artistic and thematic features of his verse.

In the book’s introduction, the author emphasizes that this work goes beyond the task of collection, by also underscoring the role of judges in Arabic literary production. It illustrates how this class of scholars and state officials actively shaped the features of Arabic literature—an important addition to the Arabic library and its poetic heritage at its most flourishing stage.

This achievement constitutes another distinguished scholarly contribution from faculty members of the University of Karbala, reflecting the ongoing academic efforts of the College of Islamic Sciences in reviving and editing heritage with a sound scientific vision.
