The College of Islamic Sciences Discusses a Master’s Thesis on the Principles of Jurisprudence in “Tafsir al-Tabarsi’s Majma‘ al-Bayan”

The College of Islamic Sciences at the University of Karbala held a master’s thesis defense titled: “Principles of Jurisprudence Topics in Majma‘ al-Bayan – A Presentation and Analysis,” presented by student Hussein Makki Aboud Al-Janabi. The discussion took place in the Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) Hall at the college.

The study aimed to establish an epistemological and methodological link between the sciences of Usul al-Fiqh (Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence) and Tafsir (Quranic Exegesis), asserting that deep interpretation cannot be separated from solid foundational jurisprudential principles. The thesis highlighted the close interrelationship between the two sciences, which contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the sacred texts and enriches methods of inferential exegesis.

The thesis also shed light on the contribution of Shaykh Al-Tabarsi as a scholar of Usul through his exegesis “Majma‘ al-Bayan,” demonstrating how he employed jurisprudential principles within the interpretive context, moving beyond abstract theorization. This represents a scholarly illumination of an overlooked dimension that had not been the subject of specialized academic studies previously.

The examining committee praised the thesis for its qualitative contribution to the field of integrated Quranic and jurisprudential studies, considering it a significant step toward opening new horizons in the analysis of interpretive texts from a scholarly Usuli perspective.

At the end of the discussion, the thesis was awarded a grade of “Excellent,” in recognition of the student’s efforts and the scholarly merit of the research.
