The College of Islamic Sciences at the University of Karbala held the defense of a PhD dissertation entitled:
“Grammatical Probability in the Qur’anic Exegesis Ruh al-Ma‘ani by Al-Alusi (d. 1270 AH)”, presented by researcher Ali Kazem Bijay Al-Saeedi.
The dissertation focused on the phenomenon of grammatical probability as one of the prominent linguistic features in works on Qur’anic parsing and interpretation. It concentrated on Al-Alusi’s Ruh al-Ma‘ani, one of the most significant exegetical works that dealt with Qur’anic texts through multiple grammatical possibilities, thereby broadening and directing meaning in line with context and indication.
The researcher adopted a descriptive-analytical methodology, tracking the grammatical opinions presented by Al-Alusi, analyzing and comparing them with the views of grammarians and exegetes, in light of Qur’anic context and linguistic evidence. The aim was to arrive at the most probable interpretation of meaning, or to identify inconsistencies where present, while offering a scholarly preference based on grammatical tools and principles of interpretation.
The study concluded by highlighting the importance of grammatical probability in achieving a deeper understanding of Qur’anic texts, and its contribution to enriching both grammatical and exegetical studies—particularly when accompanied by contextual and cognitive awareness that transcends the limits of surface meaning.
