The College of Islamic Sciences Holds a Seminar on Women and Their Role in Decision-Making

The Women’s Affairs Unit at the College of Islamic Sciences, University of Karbala, organized a scientific seminar titled “Women and Their Role in Decision-Making – The Parliamentary Elections as a Model.” The seminar was presented by Assistant Lecturer Bashayer Sabah Mahdi, the unit’s liaison member, with the attendance of a number of faculty members, students, and those interested in social and political affairs.

The seminar discussed several themes focusing on the importance of women’s empowerment, not only as a human right but as a fundamental necessity for the progress and prosperity of societies. It emphasized that women, through various experiences, have proven their capability in leadership, decision-making, and effective contribution to development.

The lecturer stressed that parliamentary elections represent one of the most prominent forms of political participation in democratic systems, and women’s involvement—whether as voters or candidates—serves as an indicator of the society’s awareness of citizenship rights and its level of civil advancement.

The seminar addressed women’s roles as voters, including:
• Choosing policies and laws that reflect their concerns and interests.
• Encouraging other women to engage in the political process.
• Representing the voice of social conscience during elections.

As for women’s participation as candidates, the seminar highlighted:
• Representing women’s and community issues directly and effectively.
• Presenting new perspectives on education, health, and social justice.
• Demonstrating their competence in legislation and decision-making.

In conclusion, the seminar emphasized that women’s political participation is not an individual achievement but a fundamental pillar for building a balanced, fair, and inclusive nation. Empowering women in this field contributes to strengthening democracy and achieving comprehensive development.
