The Women’s Affairs Unit at the College of Islamic Sciences, University of Karbala, held a scientific symposium titled:
“The Role of the Educational Family in Combating the Phenomenon of Terrorism,” as part of the protection and prevention track.

The symposium featured contributions from two faculty members:
Dr. Worood Ali Abdul-Hussein and Assistant Lecturer Weam Ali Khamis from the College of Islamic Sciences.

The aim of the symposium was to shed light on the concept of terrorism—both linguistically and in terminology—and to explore its causes and various dimensions. It also addressed the political, intellectual, and economic factors that may influence individuals and push them toward extremism.

Furthermore, the symposium discussed the role of educational institutions, especially universities, in confronting this phenomenon by promoting values of moderation and balance among students and academics.

The symposium concluded with several key recommendations, including:

  1. Strengthening the role of higher education in spreading a culture of tolerance and moderation, and training academics on how to deal with the issue of terrorism.
  2. Launching awareness campaigns within universities to raise student consciousness.
  3. Assisting youth in building balanced social relationships and encouraging them to choose their friends wisely.
  4. Supporting families affected by extremism and providing preventive measures.
  5. Enhancing the role of women in family upbringing and in combating extremist ideologies.
