Master’s Thesis at the College of Islamic Sciences Discusses the Exegetical Efforts of Allama Muhammad Baqir al-Majlisi in Maladh al-Akhyar

The College of Islamic Sciences at the University of Karbala hosted a defense of the master’s thesis submitted by student Hajar Maki Khalil al-Shahristani, titled:
“The Exegetical Efforts of Allama Muhammad Baqir al-Majlisi in Maladh al-Akhyar*.”

The thesis provided an analytical study of the exegetical methodology adopted by Allama Muhammad Baqir al-Majlisi—one of the prominent scholars of the Imami school in the 11th century AH—in his commentary on Qur’anic verses within his well-known work Maladh al-Akhyar fi Fahm Tahdhib al-Akhbar. This book is considered one of the significant sources of Imami jurisprudence, as it serves as an extensive commentary on Tahdhib al-Ahkam by Shaykh al-Tusi (may Allah have mercy on him), which itself is a jurisprudential commentary on al-Muqni‘ah by Shaykh al-Mufid (may Allah have mercy on him).

The thesis highlighted the unique exegetical nature of al-Majlisi’s efforts, demonstrating how he employed an integrative methodology between the Qur’an and the Hadith. He utilized Qur’anic verses to explain narrations and to present the Imams’ (peace be upon them) perspectives on jurisprudential and Hadith-related issues. It further emphasized the reciprocal relationship between Qur’anic exegesis and the interpretation of narrations, reflecting the depth of al-Majlisi’s exegetical approach.

The researcher affirmed that al-Majlisi’s exegesis does not merely present surface meanings, but rather uncovers subtle connotations of the texts. His methodology serves as a reflective mirror of Imami thought, uniting reason and transmission, exegesis and jurisprudence, in the study of religious texts.
