The College of Islamic Sciences, University of Karbala, examined a master’s thesis by student Ali Fakhri Bash Agha titled: “The Phenomenon of Subtlety in the Holy Qur’an: An Interpretive Study.”
The study sought to conceptualize and define “subtlety” in Qur’anic discourse, its causes and methods, viewing it as a textual phenomenon employed by the Qur’an to gently guide the audience toward truth.
The thesis included four chapters:
- Theoretical concepts and distinctions between subtlety and related notions.
- The causes for the Qur’an’s use of subtlety.
- Methods of subtlety and their interpretive implications.
- The interpretive scope of subtlety, with applied examples.
The research emphasized subtlety as a Qur’anic strategy that goes beyond aesthetic beauty to serve persuasive, pedagogical, and spiritual purposes. It concluded that subtlety embodies a higher Qur’anic method of influencing diverse audiences with wisdom and gentleness.
The committee awarded the thesis an excellent grade, recognizing its originality and scholarly contribution.
