Dr. Muslim Hussein Aboud, a faculty member at the Department of Qur’anic Sciences and Islamic Education, College of Islamic Sciences, University of Karbala, published a research paper titled “The Impact of the General and the Explicit in the Interpretation of the Holy Qur’an” in the proceedings of the 4th International Scientific Conference on Sustainable Development and Scientific Research, held in Beirut with the participation of distinguished scholars and academics from various countries.
The study analyzed the concepts of generality (ijmāl) and explication (tabyīn) in Qur’anic discourse, highlighting their role in the interpretation of key verses related to significant theological issues. It also presented applied examples from classical exegesis works, demonstrating how exegetes addressed general expressions in the Qur’an and the methods they employed for clarification.
Dr. Aboud emphasized that generality is a stylistic phenomenon within the Qur’anic text, appearing at the level of vocabulary and syntax, while the theory of explication uncovers the intended meanings of such generalities across multiple domains—including creed, jurisprudential rulings, narratives, and other Qur’anic texts.
This achievement reflects the ongoing efforts of the College of Islamic Sciences to support rigorous scientific research and to actively contribute to international academic forums that promote authentic Islamic thought and shed light on exegetical issues with deep theological and intellectual impact.
